Jonathan T . Korletey, Charles Kumah-Ntim
This study examined the content and scope of Drawing in the HND Commercial Arts Curriculum of the School of Applied Arts and its impact on teaching and learning of Drawing in the First Year Foundation class. Data were derived from the activities of interviews with Lecturers/Instructors and classroom observations. Both ethnographic content analysis and descriptive statistics were employed in the data analysis. The study revealed that the content and scope of drawing in the HND Commercial Arts Curriculum is basic and obsolete with regard to the current trend of teaching and learning of drawing which now hinges on the shoulders of technological advancement and discovery of new drawing media, techniques in drawing and supports. The impact of the Curriculum in teaching and learning of drawing is awfully hindered by challenges that need administrative attention and review of the Curriculum. The study therefore suggested the need for the National Board for Professional Technician Examination (NABTEX) to periodically liaise with the Polytechnic, subject specialists, commerce and industry, for dedicated review of the Curriculum.

A Guide to Teaching First-Year Basic Design and Technology in Junior High Schools in Ghana
European Journal of Education Studies, 2019
Abudulai Issah
The Basic Design and Technology program was introduced into the Junior High School curriculum in September 2007. It is one of the elective subjects taught at the Junior High School level all over Ghana. A cursory study indicates the existence of problems in the acquisition of practical skills in the Basic Design and Technology (BDT) program offered in the Junior High Schools. No study was found to have been done regarding the actual challenges in skills acquisition in the program. This study, therefore, fills the gap and purposefully focuses on the teaching and the learning outcomes of pupils among other related issues. The study examines the teaching methods of teachers, considering the limited facilities available and how they affect pupils' acquisition of practical skills and competence. The qualitative research method was used for the study which sought to describe the processes for teaching and learning of Basic Design and Technology and to describe the tools used. Implicat...

This study employed qualitative research method. Using purposive and simple random sampling techniques, sample of three mixed SHS, 77 respondents comprising fourteen teachers and 63 students were selected for study. Questionnaire responses revealed some shortcomings in teaching and learning of layout, composition, design and lettering topics under GKA, GD and PM in the three SHS. During personal observation of teaching and learning of the four topics’ lessons, Visual Art students used improvised tools like bamboo/cane for calligraphy. Some students used 4/5 or six colours for three colour works, a teacher said, black letters can solely be used for citation. Above flaws and others indicate that som...

Raymond I H E A N Y I C H U K W U Mbata
ABSTRACTIn the midst of a globalized world characterized by deployment of Computer Aided Design (CAD), and the establishment of the new rule by the Architects’ Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) stating that all first to third year students of design studios (Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning) in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences must use hand-drafting in the studio and other design based courses. Thus, this study is to ascertain the students’ knowledge and appreciation of Hand Drawing/Drafting Techniques in design studio courses in the faculty of environmental Sciences, Rivers State University (RSU) in the departments of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. This report carries data and graphical representations of student’s knowledge and appreciation of Hand Drawing/Drafting Techniques in design studio courses, and a general statement of the Hand Drawing/Drafting Techniques in design studios that was obtained through a structured questionnaires administered to students from second year to fourth and fifth year as the case may be in the 2017/2018 academic session. Data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and result showed that students have barely average knowledge of hand drawing/drafting techniques and it is recommended that hand drawing/drafting be taken more serious in the early stages of the education as to strengthen the students’ knowledge and build a stable solid foundation as they progress. Keywords: Hand Drawing/Drafting, Design Studio, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning.

The paper describes the importance of graphicacy as a key communication tool in our everyday lives. The need to better understand the development of graphicacy and its use in the school curriculum is emphasised. The need for a new research tool is explained and the development of a new taxonomy of graphicacy is described. The use of this tool within a methodology researching the significance of graphicacy in the curriculum is introduced. An overview of prior research concerning how children deal with graphicacy is also provided. The paper then discusses the results reported in the context of this prior research. The paper illustrates how graphicacy can affect children's learning; identifies cross-curricular links involving different areas of graphicacy and consequential transfer opportunities; illustrates how the implementation of a curriculum policy for graphicacy could influence students' learning; demonstrates the magnitude of the research opportunities in relation to gra...

Path of Science, 2019
Patrick S . O . Uddin
This paper focuses on students’ perception of teachers’ knowledge, attitude and skills in the teaching of technical drawing in Edo and Delta States of Nigeria. The empirical results are based on a quantitative survey of 300 students who were asked to evaluate their technical drawing teachers. The findings show that technical drawing students perceived their technical drawing teachers to have some negative attitudes because they disliked some of their students (2.18±1.17), rarely show concern when students have problems of poor understanding of some technical concepts (1.27±1.13) and always waited for students to remind them of their teaching periods (2.30±1.15). Some of the positive attitudes attributed to their teachers were; they always encourage good laboratory habits among technical drawing students (3.39±0.93) and encouraged parents to equip their children with the required materials they need for effective learning of technical drawing (3.34±0.91). Further, students perceived their teachers effective in preparing and organizing lesson notes adequately (3.27±0.93) as such applied facts and principles to problem-solving (3.31±0.86). The findings support the conclusion that there are aspects of teachers’ knowledge, attitude and skills in teaching technical drawing that is less than excellent and in need of further enhancement.
