One of Steve Jobs' most unwavering beliefs might surprise leaders who aspire to success as great as the Apple cofounder. When Jobs and Apple’s other cofounders, including Steve Wozniak, first realized how big their company would be, they decided to go out and hire what they called “professional management,” or folks who just knew how to manage people. But it quickly backfired.“It didn’t work at all,” Jobs said in a mid-1980s interview. “Most of them were bozos. They knew how to manage, but they didn’t know how to do anything.”Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNkX2dNv

NVIDIA’s technological prowess has lifted the chip giant to the commanding heights of the red-hot artificial intelligence space. But a former employee provided a key insight into CEO Jensen Huang’s management philosophy that has also been key to the company’s stratospheric rise.Rene Haas, CEO of UK chip designer Arm, worked at Nvidia in the early 2010s and told the Financial Times that Huang organized the company around projects rather than traditional hierarchies, allowing him to access any layer of management and get answers directly. “It’s a very unique culture,” Haas told the FT. “The benefit of that is transparency and speed. And I think that is one of the things that Nvidia is really, really good at. They move very, very fast, they’re very, very purposeful.”Read more: https://lnkd.in/d6DJFZXT

Sheryl Taylor works as an administrator for Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Each summer, she has to leave the island or stay with friends because she can’t afford the high seasonal rents. How high? The average vacation home rents for $6,500 a week.“I have spent a significant amount of time couch surfing,” said Taylor, the school’s equity and access coordinator. “With my suitcase in my car, and moving one or two nights here and there with friends on the island.”Taylor’s plight reflects that of many on the Massachusetts island off Cape Cod. There are plenty of jobs, but restaurants and stores often can’t find enough staff becauseworkers can’t afford to live there. Officials worry public safety is being compromised because they can’t retain or lure correctional officers or 911 dispatchers. bit.ly/4cz36Ub

DoorDash debuted on the Fortune 500 this year, clocking in at $8.6 billion in revenue and with its monthly active user base soaring to more than 37 million by the end of 2023. “When we first started, our goal wasn’t to build a food delivery business. The goal was to build a local commerce business," CFO Ravi Inukonda told Fortune. But DoorDash quickly noticed that food delivery was a high-frequency use case, with people generally eating three times a day—or 100 times a month. That led to the company building out two strong networks: a “very powerful delivery network,” and one for consumers, Inukonda explained. After beginning in the U.S., where it now has over 60% of the food-delivery market share, DoorDash can be found in over 30 countries.Read more: https://lnkd.in/ehP3r5SD

After ousting BP CEO Bernard Looney after failing to disclose personal relationships at work, the $100 billion oil giant isn’t taking another chance on its lovestruck managers. In an email circulated to staff last week, BP told employees they were now required to disclose all “familial and intimate relationships at work” or face following Looney out the door, Reuters first reported. To avoid an embarrassing repeat of the Looney situation, BP has also updated its code of conduct, which “prohibits employees from directly or indirectly managing relatives or those with whom they’re in an intimate relationship.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYtsqZjq

Indra Nooyi may have led one of the world’s top soda purveyors for 12 years—but she keeps her advice sugar-free.Over the course of the former PepsiCo CEO’s decade-plus tenure—during which sales grew 80%—Nooyi was named the most powerful woman in business by Fortune five years in a row. She stepped down from the CEO role in 2018 and retired from PepsiCo’s board in 2019, after 24 years with the company. At the 2019 Fortune Most Powerful Women conference, Nooyi was asked for her thoughts on balancing family and work as a woman. “To integrate work and family is going to be a challenge,” Nooyi said, and the first issue that needs to be addressed is unconscious bias in the workplace.“When bias happens in the workforce, it strips away a woman’s confidence,” she said. “When it attacks your confidence, it attacks your competence.”Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7fHTzMf
